Sale shopping with Jamelia

26 December 2008 93 views No Comment

‘I’m a champion sales shopper,” says the award-winning R&B singer, Jamelia. “My favourite time is first thing in the morning. I like to be the early bird. I’ll get there even before opening time, then the moment the doors open, I head straight for what I’ve got my eye on. I don’t like all the crowds and the fighting and grabbing for things that can go on. If it gets too busy and crazy I’d rather be at home, shopping online.”

Although she loves the high street – her favourites are Topshop, H&M, French Connection and Karen Millen – Jamelia looks to designer labels when it is sales time.

“I love a designer bargain, especially if it’s Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Azzedine Alaia or Burberry. And I’m really into the new, young designers like Christopher Kane – who made me a special dress for one of my albums – and Marios Schwab.

“My real weakness, though, is shoes. Jimmy Choo, Christian Louboutin, Gina, Manolo – I love them all. I never throw any away. I must have about 300 pairs at home.”

Home for Jamelia is a comfortable house in a small village on the outskirts of Birmingham, where she lives with her footballer husband of six months, Darren Byfield, the Doncaster striker on loan at Oldham Athletic, their daughter Tiana, three, and Teja, seven, Jamelia’s daughter from a previous relationship.

The 27-year-old is currently recording her fourth studio album, which will be released in spring 2009, and is also working with a ghost writer on a book entitled Stronger, which will tell how she was signed to Capitol Records at the age of 15, after sending them her self-penned a capella music recorded on a karaoke machine.

HILARY’S HINTS FOR A PERFECT SALES STRATEGY

1 Don’t waste time dithering: have a master plan on where you want to shop.

2 Check out your favourite stores/designers beforehand and earmark your prize bargain. A friendly sales assistant might put it aside for you.

3 Wear comfortable shoes– the sales are not a time for doing a Victoria Beckham in six-inch heels.

4 Prioritise your needs: Classics, Investments or Impulse Experiments.

5 Set a budget — and don’t blow it.

6 Try things on — something that does not fit or flatter is NOT a bargain, no matter how cheap.

7 Shop solo — a lone bargain hunter moves faster and makes decisions quicker.

8 Think ahead! The Eighties, fringing, transparency, colour blocks and crisp suits are all tipped for spring ’09.

9 Bulk-buy if it’s a favourite.

10 Never hit the sales after a girlie Christmas lunch.
