While at the Game Developers Conference, we just got a peek at Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 running on a Palm Pre Plus. It’s the same technical demo that’s been shown off on the iPhone, both at CES back in January and on Wednesday at Epic’s talk about changes it had to make in order to get the engine running on Apple’s iPhone OS.
According to Epic Games’ Vice President Mark Rein, with whom CNET spoke earlier on Thursday, Palm was only given a test version of the Unreal Development Kit ...

In 1996, Congress passed the landmark Telecommunications Act. The last major reform of communications law, the 1996 act ended Judge Harold Greene’s 10-year effort to run America’s telecommunications industry from his judicial chambers after the forced breakup of AT&T.
Since then, consumers have lived in two very different worlds.
One is the land of unregulated “information services.” It includes, among other innovations, the World Wide Web, voice over Internet Protocol telephony, wireless applications, and cloud computing.
The other is the regulated world of “telecommunications services.” It consists of traditional wireline telephones, plain and ...

It took a while, but Google has made its big move as a local shopping inventory gatekeeper. The company said Thursday that it will offer mobile device users inventory checks on local stores, allowing them to see if products are available.
The program has already enlisted some key retailers including Sears, Best buy, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn, and West Elm. Rest assured that local merchants, which increasingly rely on Google to send business their way, will follow suit.
These local inventory checks have been talked about for years. In 2006, Google, Intuit, and ...

Pregnant women who have had a cesarean section before most likely end up having one again, according to one in three hospitals that say a repeat cesarean is the only option.
Experts say that 9 out of 10 women end up getting a cesarean if they’ve had one before, a fact that worried those in attendance at a national conference this week on vaginal birth after cesarean, or VBAC.
There is no agreement about how often VBAC should be attempted, but experts agree that the current rate of cesarean births is too ...

The loggerhead sea turtle should be classified as an endangered species, American wildlife agencies recommended on Wednesday, in a move that could provide enhanced protection for the world’s largest hard-shelled turtle by next summer.
According to Baltimore Sun reporter Timothy B. Wheeler, “The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said they had determined that the status of seven of nine population groups of the turtles around the world had worsened to the point that they should be considered endangered.”

Lehman tumbled into its $639 billion bankruptcy, the biggest in US history, because it didn’t have enough liquidity and lost the confidence of its counterparties, according to a 2,200-page report from Anton Valukas, the US Trustee-appointed examiner.
By changing guarantee agreements and making new demands for collateral, JP Morgan and Citigroup helped to precipitate the liquidity crisis that doomed Lehman, Mr Valukas said. “The demands for collateral by Lehman’s lenders had direct impact on Lehman’s liquidity pool,” he said. “Lehman’s available liquidity is central to the question of why Lehman failed.”

The High Court agreed to give him bail a week after he was held at Heathrow airport on suspicion of being involved in the massacre of 40 Yugoslav soldiers in 1992.
His release from Wandsworth prison was secured after the intervention of Mrs Jenkins who left Bosnia as penniless refugee.

The settlement was announced Thursday evening by the WTC Captive Insurance Co., a special entity established to indemnify the city and its contractors against potential legal action as they moved to clean up the site after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
